The "In Kilter" completed the 2011 Oxfam Trailwalker in 27 hours 23 minutes, finishing in 314th position (out of 679 teams that actually completed the event). The annual event involves teams of four attempting to complete the 100 kilometre course in less than 48 hours. The course which is split into 8 stages began at Jells Park in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne and finished at Wesburn Park near Warburton.

The first 50 kilometres of the event contained the majority of the 2000 metre climb and saw the team arrive into Olinda (Checkpoint 4) for dinner after nine hours of walking. Night fell just prior to arriving into checkpoint 5 at Mount Evelyn. Blisters started appearing near the end of the following stage 6 a direct result of the hard flat surface of the Warburton Trail. We had a long stop at Woori Yallock Primary School (Checkpoint 6) to patch up our ailing feet and have a power-nap.

Seven kilometres into the penultimate 20 kilometre stage a blister on the left pinky toe of one team member became unbearable and he withdrew from the event. A disappointment for the team but it also provided the impetus for the remaining team members to finish the event. The O’Shannassy Aqueduct Trail saw the monotony continue until sunrise about 3 kilometres before the end of the leg which provided some inspiration.

The team had a welcomed 3 hour break at the Warburton Golf Club (Checkpoint 7) which provided time for a small sleep, some breakfast and contemplation of the final stage up over the imposing Mount Little Joe. By this stage uphill sections were a welcome relief to blisters and feet in general. The first steep downhill section of the leg was painful followed by a steep climb which was tantalisingly close to the finish. Plenty of other walkers on the trail had told us about making it through the final section on adrenaline and this certainly helped us down the last steep descent and across the finish line.

A flood of emotions experienced by all team members as we crossed the finish line was hard to describe. Relief was soon replaced by an immense sense of accomplishment, firstly for having completed 100 kilometres but more importantly because we had raised in excess of $3000 for Oxfam to reduce poverty and injustice across the globe.
